CECIL John Rhodes Primary School is this year’s champions of the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe Heritage Quiz competition held at Mutare Museum last Friday.

The tightly-contested event saw the Gweru-based school garnering 45 points, while second-placed Mpumelelo Primary School from Bulawayo collected 37 points.

The eastern region’s provincial representative, John Cowie Primary School, settled for third position after they accumulated 33 points.

The Heritage Quiz Competition is National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe’s annual flagship event for primary schools.

National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe, Heritage Education Officer, Kainos Mukonavanhu, said the quiz competition lived to expectations and school children turned up in their numbers to support their colleagues.

“We would like to congratulate Cecil John Rhodes Primary School and we wish them the best in their future endeavours.

‘‘We are happy that all went well. It was a bigger and better event than last year,” he said.

The purpose of the quiz competitions aims to promote both natural and cultural heritage as well as to appreciate and preserve it for later generations to come, said Mukonavanhu.

“The programme is very much in line with the new school curriculum. We expect there to be close relationships between schools and museums in the country because it is our children’s right that they have knowledge of their heritage,” said Mukonavanhu.

Participating were five primary school finalists from the five museum regions in the country.

Winners walked away with cash prizes, stationery, satchels and accommodation vouchers.
