A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy from Mutare’s Greenside low-density suburb drowned in a well on Monday.

Kudakwashe Maoko’s body was found floating in a well after he was left unattended. Police said the incident happened at Stand Number 10199, Greenside Extension at around 6pm.

“Patricia Mbaura (25) was cooking outside when the incident happened. Kuda who was also outside could not be found prompting Patricia and Fortune Matongo who reside at the same house to conduct a search. They called him several times, but they could not get any answers. They later found his body floating in a well in the same yard,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa.

They reported the matter to the police.
Members of Mutare Fire Brigade attended the scene and retrieved the body from the well.

No foul play is suspected. “We urge parents and guardians not to live their children unattended. Such incidents could be avoided if parents keep a close eye on their children, especially tender ones,” warned Insp Kakohwa.

Maoko was laid to rest on Wednesday morning in Nyanga. In an unrelated incident, a Zimunya woman who could not fathom sharing her husband with her sister last Friday decided to cut her own life short by consuming a pesticide.

The incident happened in Dedza Village in Chief Zimunya’s area. Susan Chakauya (35) and Elizabeth Chakauya (25) were siblings who were both married to one husband, Watson Taonezvi (45).

Susan alleged that Elizabeth was causing confusion in their marriage. She further accused her of ruining her marriage. On May 19, they quarreled over plastic buckets and this did not go down well with Susan who consumed a pesticide. She left the cup in the yard and proceeded to the fields where she was later found dead. Insp Kakohwa urged married couples to solve disputes amicably by seeking professional counselling.
