CAPS United coach, Lloyd Chitembwe, pledged an approach full of attacking flair ahead of his team’s clash against continental football giants USM Alger of Algeria in a CAF Champions’ League Group B and the Green Machine did just that to earn a well deserved 2-1 triumph over the Algerians.
Wednesday’s victory at the National Sports Stadium means CAPS United stay in the hunt for a place beyond the group stage matches of the prestigious CAF club competition, thanks to a Ronald Chitiyo brace that sunk the feared Algerians.
Interestingly, CAPS United had vowed to play a special brand of attacking football and indeed Makepekepe were all out for maximum points from the first whistle, hence a total of 20 shots on target as well as nine offside calls against the Harare side.
“It’s certainly one of the most important matches, one of the biggest for this club, so we are looking forward to it. We know it will not be easy as we are playing one of the most difficult opponents.
“But we will try and play with a lot of confidence, a lot of determination. I can assure you a lot of attacking flair and joy because this is how we want to play,” Chitembwe told the pre-match Press conference on Tuesday.
Following their defeat in the opening Group B match against Zamalek of Egypt in Alexandria two weeks ago, Caps United needed a win to restore good health to their campaign.
USM Alger came into Wednesday’s encounter as favourites, not only because of their experience, but also after their emphatic 3-1 triumph against Al Ahli of Tripoli in the first round of the CAF Champions’ League group matches.
CAPS United are with Zamalek, USM ALger, Ahli Tripoli in Group B of the CAF Champions League group stages.
