POLICE in Manicaland are investigating a case in which a 75-year old woman was found hanging from a tree in a bushy area in Chipinge.

She was naked and without her left leg raising suspicions that she was killed for ritual purposes. The woman, identified as Maparadza Mhlanga, of Manhope village under chief Gwenzi in Chipinge was discovered by a villager Thomas Mlambo (39) of the same village after 10 days.

Investigations are underway and it is being treated as a murder case.

Mhlanga went missing for 10 days and was found hanging by her right leg while her left leg had been severed off. Her body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Manicaland Police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm receiving a report involving a 75 year old woman who was found dead hanging from a tree. Her body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Investigations are still in progress as foul play is suspected,” said Insp Kakohwa.

Insp Kakohwa said on March 1 at around 1900 hours, the now diseased visited her neighbour Tendai Mejani (37) of the same village. She told her that she was not feeling well and wanted Mejani to convey the message to her daughter Rosemary Mlambo (35) of Mugandi village under chief Gwenzi. On March 4 at around 11am, Mejani visited Maparadza to assess her condition and could not locate her but the doors were open.

Insp Kakohwa said that on March 11 at around 10am Mejani met Rosemary and informed her that her mother was not feeling well. Rosemary proceeded to Muparadza’s homestead but could not locate her. Rosemary informed village head Happison Gwenzi (41) who advised villagers to conduct a search.

On March 14, a villager Thomas Mlambo found the body of Maparadza in a state of decomposition, along Marere River bank. The body was naked, hanging from a tree by the right leg with the left one missing. Muparadza’s clothes were later found on the ground.

Insp Kakohwa said they were still conducting investigations to find the perpetrators.

Meanwhile a Chimanimani man murdered his wife after an altercation. Insp Kakohwa said the man only identified as Meki of Mandiyamba village under chief Ngoma in Chimanimani went for a beer drink at Mhuka’s homestead. His wife Nyemudzai Chiodza followed him and it did not go down well with him. They had a quarrel, which resulted in a physical fight. Meki picked up a stone and hit his wife on the head before people restrained them.

At around 8pm the same day, Meki’s friend Titus Mukwayo visited the couple and saw them fighting again. He tried to stop the fight but was hit with an unknown object. The following morning, Mukwayo’s wife Sarah Magome visited the couple. On arrival, she was attracted by an unpleasant smell. She opened the door and found Chiodza dead. Meki had fled the scene and is still at large.

A report was made to Chimanimani police station.

Insp Kakohwa said as police, they were disturbed that crimes of passion continued to rise.
