THE Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene, has given all local authorities in Manicaland September 1 deadline to allocate traditional leaders residential stands.

Speaking on the sidelines of World Malaria Day in Chibuwe on Monday, Cde Mandi Chimene, said no local authority had complied with her last year’s directive that all chiefs should be beneficiaries of residential stands.

“I am directing all council chairpersons in Manicaland Province to allocate chiefs residential stands by September 1. Last year we directed all local authorities to allocate chiefs residential stands, but no-one complied.

“It is worrisome to see chiefs being sidelined in benefiting from the allocation of residential stands, yet they are the custodians of the land. Chiefs play a great role in our communities and it is now time for us to reward them.

“We always invite traditional leaders to many Government programmes, but we forget about their welfare,” she said.

Cde Chimene also urged the District Administrator’s office to arrange a meeting with traditional leaders and their local legislators to find ways on how they could develop irrigation schemes.

Turning to the issue of residential stands being allocated to youths, Cde Chimene said there was no going back.

She challenged the two local authorities in Chipinge to avail land suitable for residential stands.

“There is no going back in availing residential stands to youths and the programme is set to benefit everyone across the political divide.

“We are also urging local authorities to speed up identifying land suitable for residential stands in all districts. We need to see our youths being proud owners of houses in line with President Mugabe’s vision of empowerment,” she added.
