VETERAN sports administrator and former Fifa panel match official, Masimba Chihowa is the new Zimbabwe National Youth Games Team Manicaland general manager.Chihowa takes over from the late former St Mathias High School headmaster, James Mwonzora who passed on recently.
The Chancellor Primary School headmaster who attended the National Youth Games general managers’ meeting in Chinhoyi recently is not a stranger to the corridors of power in the National Youth Games administration as he was the assistant general manager (technical) until his recent elevation.
In an interview, Chihowa said he was confident of achieving good results in that position given the support that the key stakeholders in Manicaland have always given to the National Youth Games.
He said Team Manicaland’s preparations for the 14th edition of the National Youth Games to be held in Chinhoyi were already underway with the selection of athletes at an advanced stage.
“I fully accepted the post of Team Manicaland general manager Manicaland National Youth Games. I have been part of the National Youth Games administration set up working as assistant general manager (technical).
“The only difference that I see now is that I will now be managing a wide spectrum of areas that have to do with Team Manicaland’s participation in its entirety.
“We have already started preparations and we have covered a lot of ground so far. I consulted with the athletics coaches during NASH national competitions that were held at Hillcrest College.
“They are the ones who form the bulk of our representative athletes as NASH. We have also started selecting the team that will represent us in soccer.
“We will also use the Willard Katsande tournament to select players that we think will fit in the team to represent Manicaland. Selection is also going on at various levels in netball, handball and basketball.
“However, I feel we need to do more in boxing. Over the years we have not had enough, if any, female boxers.
“The aspect that the political leadership as well as the corporate world in Manicaland have always been supportive of the National Youth Games gives me confidence to believe that we make the province proud,” said Chihowa.
Chinhoyi will host the 14th edition of the National Youth Games in August after more than 3 500 athletes and officials converged in Mutare from August 15 to 23 last year for the 2015 edition of the National Youth Games which was officially opened by Vice-President Emerson Mnangagwa at Sakubva Stadium.
