Checheche accident claims 9 The Green Fuel truck was involved in a head-on collision with a kombi, killing nine passengers on the spot, yesterday, near Checheche.

NINE people died on the spot while eight others were seriously injured when a Green Fuel haulage truck ferrying sugar cane from Middle Sabi crashed head-on with a kombi along the Tanganda-Ngundu road on Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred about four kilometers before Checheche Growth Point, when the truck driver tried to overtake another truck and encroached into the lane of the oncoming kombi, leading to a head-on collision.

Chipinge district civil protection unit chairperson Mr William Mashava confirmed the accident.

“Nine people died on the spot at Chimbambo Business Centre near Checheche Growth Point. The accident occurred around 1pm yesterday (Sunday) when a Green Fuel haulage truck ferrying sugar cane from Middle Sabi tried to overtake another truck from the same company, resulting in a head-on collision with a Nissan Caravan kombi that had 17 passengers on board,” said Mr Mashava.

Five passengers, who were seriously injured, were referred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital while the other three, who sustained moderate injuries, were admitted at Chiredzi General Hospital.

Chipinge district police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Memory Chirambadare could not release the deceased’s names as their next of kin had not been advised.
