GOVERNMENT’S funding towards socio-economic development and empowerment programmes is being directed to the wrong people who are failing to put if to its proper use, a Government Minister has said.

Speaking during the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy outreach programme held at a local hotel last Thursday, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene, said capital towards reduction of poverty was not being channeled to the right recipients.

She said the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy fact finding exercise going on across the country must not be another talk show that would be marred by poor implementation.

“It is wiser for Government funds to be given to people who can put them to the right use, produce good results and let other copy the good work. Failures should not have access to the funds.

“Manicaland Province has enough resources that can feed the whole nation, but we are lacking knowledge across different sectors.

“We need knowledge on how to market our products when it comes to the agriculture sector, but the problem is that we sell everything to other provinces and remain with nothing in our provinces. That is why we are having the highest rate of poverty in Manicaland.

“We have gathered on so many occasions for different fact finding outreach programmes, but the question we have is what are you going to do with the information that we will give you? Many a times these outreach programmes end up being talk shows characterised by poor implementation.

“We need not have the same for this Poverty Reduction Strategy outreach programme. It is high time that we implement our policies properly so that we reduce the economic and social challenges that this nation is facing,” said Cde Chimene.

Chief Chimombe also concurred with Cde Chimene’s idea and said: “There is also need for the reduction of corruption in Manicaland and work together towards uplifting the poor. Manicaland has the capacity to feed the whole nation, but there is too much corruption and greediness among us.”

The Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy is a Government initiative meant to identify practical short term solutions to challenges being faced in the implementation of Zim-Asset.

The inter-ministerial initiative being co-ordinated by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has seen officials from several Government ministries gathering ideas from key stakeholders in every province.

They have already covered Midlands, Masvingo, Matebeleland South and Matebeleland North provinces before coming to Manicaland last week.
