MANICALAND Under-10 table tennis star, Trust Madoro, who came second in the Zimbabwe Closed Table Tennis Championship played over the weekend at Mutare Teachers’ College, will have a chance to mix and mingle with other junior players from the region in the Hope of Hopes Tournament scheduled for Botswana in August.

The two-day tournament attracted over 60 participants from Mashonaland East, Harare and Bulawayo.

The categories included Under-10, 15, 18, 21 and Open.  Madoro (Six), a Grade Two student at Chancellor Primary School came second behind Harare’s Takudzwa Kasekera.  Samuel Pondo from Manicaland came third in the same category. Madoro, who is being coached by his father, Kuda Madoro, came first in the same category during the Shumbas Gala held at Mutare Girls’ High School early this year.

He is now the second best in his age group in Zimbabwe. Manicaland Table Tennis development officer, William Machacha, said the event was a success.

“We hosted this event for the first time and it was a success. We had participants coming as far as Mashonaland West and Harare.  “We are working very hard as an association to revive the sport in the province. Recently we held a Level One coaching course at Mutare Teachers’ College and a total of 26 coaches attended.

“We are planning to go to all the seven districts to conduct training clinics. We are working very well with NASH and NAPH to promote the sport in the province. We will continue to have such tournaments.

“Next month we will have an open tournament at Mutare Teachers’ College. Table tennis is now being appreciated like any other sport,” he added.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe top table tennis player, Vikram Singh from Harare ruled the roost in the Open category the Zimbabwe Closed Table Tennis Championships.

Singh asserted his dominance in the game when he made light work of opponents in a competition that saw Brian Chamboko settling for second position. Manicaland’s Mlungisi Moyo who is also the country’s third ranked player came third.
