A GROUP of Caps United supporters based in Chipinge recently took time off their schedules to embark on a clean-up of the streets in the south eastern farming town.

Makepekepe supporters flooded the central business district clad in green and white regalia with brooms and shovels as they undertook the clean-up.

The campaign attracted Chipinge town officials, councillors and residents who all teamed up to carry out the exercise.

Speaking at the event, council chairperson Lovemore Huni said Chipinge has never witnessed an event where football fans shows such high sense of responsibility.

“Caps United supporters have shown us that together we can make the town clean. Receive the blessing of our local authority and because of the gesture you have shown, I can assure you that 2016 season is your year and the league title is yours,” said Huni amid ululations from the supporters.

The clean-up campaign started at the civic centre with supporters cleaning up Main Street up to the OK supermarket. They also cleaned up Jobert Street and all the other streets in the CBD area.

With their Caps United flags on cars and wrapped around them, the supporters also mingled with Chipinge residents, encouraging them to keep the town clean.

Speaking during the same occasion, interim organising secretary Teddy Beto said the campaign was aimed at encouraging people to keep a safe environment in line with team green colours as well as mobilise more supporters for Caps United in Chipinge.

“People say Caps United at times destroys the environment by cutting down trees branches but that’s not true. We are green and we believe in keeping a clean environment.
Caps supporters in small towns like Chipinge do not have organised structures and the aim of this campaign was also to mobilise supporters so that we can establish a chapter here to support our team as we move on to take the league title,” he said.

Interim chairperson James Maisiri encouraged the Caps supporters in Chipinge to be visible and continue to carry out social responsibility roles.

He said such campaigns will continue in future and will be extended to other institutions such as hospitals and clinics.
