BREAKING: Police bust stock theft syndicate

The ManicaPost

From Samuel Kadungure in Rusape

POLICE in Rusape have announced a major breakthrough in the fight against stock theft after they arrested the suspected ringleader of a notorious stock theft syndicate that has been wrecking havoc in the farming communities around the town.

The gang would steal cattle from kraals at night, drive them to secluded areas before slaughtering and deboning the carcasses. They would just leave skeletons after loading all the steak into plastic containers for sale to some butcheries and restaurants.

Rusape Central officer in charge, Chief Inspector Brian Makomeke confirmed the arrest of Tigere Chipomho, of Dzvairo, Sanzaguru on stocktheft charges. He said the arrest of Chipomho, who was expected to appear in court today, would help clear several cases of stock theft committed around Rusape.

He said police were closing in on the remaining members of the gang. He urged butchery, restaurant operators and the public not to buy beef products from unscrupulous suppliers. Chipomho and his gang would misrepresent to their clients that they operate an abattoir in Marondera, yet they were criminals who slaughtered stolen bovines in the bushes.
