CHIPINGE District is expected in the near future to start producing top athletes following the injection of a $50 000-sponsorship package by fuel consortium, Glow Petroleum.

The fund which is staggered for five years, beginning this year to December 2021, is aimed at promoting the identification of sporting talent from marginalised communities as well as build capacity for sports leaders in the district.

A number of sports icons from the district including former Dynamos defender, Lovemore Mapuya who rose to prominence are a clear indication of the great talent that needs to be tapped in the district.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony for the sponsorship recently in Chipinge, Glow Petroleum managing director, Aaron Chinhara, said it was part of his company’s social responsibility to assist marginalised communities.

“As Glow Petroleum, we are pledging a total of $50 000 for sport development in the district, stretching for a period of five years.

“For long Chipinge community has been starved of sporting heroes, not because there are no talented athletes, but because of lack of exposure,” said Chinhara, amid ululation and clapping of hands from the crowd at Chipinge Junior Primary School.

The sponsorship deal will be administered in partnership with the Ministry of Sport and Recreation.

Speaking at the same occasion, district sport development officer, Martin Sithole, said sport development was a tool that could be used to fight social ills as well as employment creation.

“Our goal as a ministry is to increase access to sports and physical activities among all communities with a bias towards the young generation. We believe sports development in itself is a panacea to reduce crime and other ills among our youth,” he said.

Sithole expressed gratitude to Glow Petroleum for their kind gesture and promised that every cent would be accounted for.

Glow Petroleum is operating in Chipinge and the sponsorship is a first of its kind for the district.
