Midlands came away with two gold medals in the national beach volleyball finals held at Birchenough Bridge, Goko High School from last week Friday to Saturday while Mashonaland East and Harare took the honours in the Boys’ category under the auspices of NASH (National Association of Secondary School Heads).

In the under 17 group, Guinea Fowl girls from the Midlands beat Chibi from Masvingo to take the gold medal and Churchill Pool A put up a spirited performance to see off Dewure from Masvingo.

Manicaland representatives, Kazozo, found the going tough but took the bronze medal in the under 17 girls’ event.

Jersey and St Joseph, the other Manicaland representatives occupied positions 6 and 7 respectively in the under 17 boys’ class.

Mnene 1 from the Midlands took pole position in the under 19 girls’ division while Mnene 2 took a bronze medal in the same event. On the other hand, Visitation from Mashonaland East took the top honours in the boys’ section with Churchill coming second.

St Faith and Goko found the going tough. The provincial Head in Charge of volleyball, Nyikadzino Makichi, said the two day national event attracted 88 teams from all over Zimbabwe and he thanked the host school, Goko High School, for putting up a stellar performance in the hosting process.

“Beach volleyball is a relatively new sport but I am glad that the uptake in schools is magnificent.

“I would like to urge schools to take up beach volleyball since it involves two players and the costs are minimal as compared to traditional game that has six players. NASH thanks the hosting school, Goko, for making those two days a joy for everyone.

“To the winners, I exhort them to continue the spirit of competition and hopefully when we meet again next year, it would be more fun for everyone,” he said.

Guinea Fowl’s Pauline Jouro was the most valuable player in the Under 17 category and Rutendo Shiri from Mnene took the honours in the Under 19 girls’ section.

Tinashe Ndavazocheva from Churchill was the most valuable player in the Under 17 boys’ section, while Visitation’s Shawn Mazhudo scooped the most valuable player gong in the Under 19 boys’ category. The Provincial Education Diretor for Manicaland, Mr Edward Shumba, said sport is vital for the growing child and it resonates with the demands of the new curriculum.
