Basketball against drugs tourney roars to life

THE fourth edition of the Basketball Against Drugs tournament roars to life on Monday at Dangamvura Basketball Courts with more than ten teams expected to battle for supremacy.

The tournament aims to raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse among youths. It starts at 11am and ends at 7pm. Teams are also expected to battle it out in other sporting disciplines such as soccer, volleyball and netball.

In soccer, Young Blood will battle against Madhara while Dangamvura will clash with Sakubva in netball. In basketball, Mutare select will play against Rusape select ladies. The main game is between Dangamvura select and Manicaland select.

Manicaland Basketball Association president, Tonde Shasha said it was all systems go.

“This is our fourth edition and we are excited that teams have expressed their commitment to be part of the noble initiative. We realised that most talented players especially in high density suburbs are greatly affected by the abuse of drugs and consequences that come with it.  We have invited people from all walks of life to be part of the initiative,” he said.

Rising contemporary artistes D-boi and Spaxx, GK money money and DJ Sachie will provide entertainment.

Meanwhile MBA has taken a break and will resume on January 12, it can be revealed.

In the men’s category, Mercenaries are the log leaders followed by Chiefs. In the ladies category, Dangamvura Knights are the log leaders while Africa University is seated on second position.

Mutare Boys High Shumbas are the log leaders in the Mutare league which is the leagues’ B League.

The league will end in April.

Each team in the men’s A League has played a total of six games. Mercenaries are leading with a total of 12 points while Dangamvura Knights are on the second position with 11 points. Florida is on the bottom of the seven team log with six points.

Hustlaz are the log leaders in the men’s B League with a total of eight points. The league is made up of four teams.

In the ladies category, Dangamvura Knights are dominating the league with a total of four games played. They have amassed eight points.
