Basketball Against Drugs tourney for Dangamvura

PREPARATIONS for the third edition of the Basketball Against Drugs Tournament slated for this Sunday at Dangamvura basketball courts are at an advanced stage, organisers have said.

Four basketball teams and two volleyball teams will clash in an encounter that promises fireworks. The tournament is meant to raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse among the ghetto youths and it is expected to commence at 11am till 7pm.

Manicaland Basketball Association president Tonde Shasha said the aim of the tourney was to fight drug abuse among ghetto youths. He added that the tournament was first introduced in 2015.

“This is our third edition. It is growing in stature as compared to the previous editions. We realised that most of our talented players are greatly affected by drugs; we are trying to do an awareness campaign against drugs.

“We have invited different people from all walks of life to come and grace the event. There will be also a lot of entertainment from our local singers,” said Shasha. Shasha, who was recently elected the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe vice-president, said they will begin with a volleyball game followed by two basketball games.

“Our games will start at 11am.We will witness a volleyball game between Legends and Young Stars before our first basketball game between Mutare Select ladies and Rusape Select ladies teams. We will wrap up with a game between Dangamvura Select and Manicaland Select men’s teams.

Meanwhile, MBA has taken a break and will resume on January 13, 2018. Each team in the men’s A League has played a total of six games. Mercenaries are leading with a total of 12 points while Dangamvura Knights are on second position with 11 points. Florida is at the bottom of the seven-team log with six points.

Hustlaz are the log leaders in the men’s B League with a total of eight points. The league is made up of four teams. In the ladies’ category, Dangamvura Knights are dominating the league with a total of four games played. They have amassed eight points.
