DARING armed robbers last week pounced at two estates in Chimanimani and allegedly assaulted security guards before making good their escape with three tonnes of Macadamia nuts valued at $36 000.

On the first incident which happened on March 14 at Rathmore Estate, 30 knife-wielding robbers assaulted two security guards before looting two tonnes of Macadamia nuts.

On another incident, 20 unknown robbers who were armed with logs attacked two security guards who were manning Arda-Rusitu Estate last Friday, before looting one tonne of Macadamia nuts which were packed in sacks.

The two robberies were carried out using the same modus operandi and police are suspecting that the robbers could have been working as a syndicate. Both incidents also happened around midnight.

“I can confirm the robberies and investigations are in progress. We have launched a manhunt to bring the suspects to book. We are appealing to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the suspects to notify their nearest police station. They need to be brought to book before they commit more robberies,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa.

The 30 robbers who were armed with knives and logs allegedly parked their two cars 400 metres away from Rathmore Estate and proceeded to the main entrance.

They were also armed with stones and approached two security guards, Edwell Madarika (37) and Knowledge Chingotsa (34).

They allegedly assaulted the duo and stabbed one of them. They left the two lying on the ground and proceeded to a storeroom where they gained entry by breaking the door locks. They stole two tonnes of Macadamia nuts and drove away.

“On the second incident, the 20 robbers approached security guards, Freedom Musikavanhu (30) and Amos Munyungwa (35) who were manning the estate premises at around 11pm and threatened to kill them if they attempt to make any noise. The two were not armed. They stole a car battery which was in a Mazda vehicle that was parked at the premises. They proceeded to a shade and stole one tonne of Macadamia nuts which were packed in a sack.

They loaded it in their station wagon vehicle (registration number unknown) and drove away. The guards made a police report,” Insp Kakohwa added.
