Alkaline, Vybz Kartel leads 2017 Youth View awards nominations

The ManicaPost

ALKALINE and Vybz Kartel dominated dancehall airwaves last year and as the awards seasons kicks into overdrive both deejays are leading the 2017 Youth View Awards nominations.

Alkaline is the top contender with a total of 10 nominations across 9 categories including Favourite Local Chart — Topping Song of the Year and Favourite Dancehall Artiste. Vybz Kartel came in second with eight nods across seven top categories including the two that Alkaline are listed in.

Kartel’s former protégé Popcaan and his frequent collaborator Spice tied for six nominations. Popcaan is also up for both Topping Song of the Year and Favourite Dancehall Artiste. Spice is contending for Favourite Local Female Artiste of the Year and Young Hot and Hype Female of the Year. Konshens, who had a great year last year, picked up five nods including the Song of the Year category for his chart topper “Bruck Off Yuh Back.”

Female dancehall newcomer Shenseea and Ding Dong each shared four nominations, while Mavado and Ishawna picked up three. This is particularly interesting given the great year that Mavado had on the local dancehall scene with a slew of hits.

This year the Youth View Awards will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary having launched in 2008 with a mandate to appreciate the Jamaican entertainment culture and a big part of that culture is dancehall music. This year’s event will be held on February 8, 2017 at the National Indoor Sports Arena in St Andrew. The awards will be hosted by Yendi Phillips and Bambino.

Alkaline and Vybz Kartel are both engaged in a lyrical feud, so it will be interesting to see who emerged from the YVA with the most trophies this year. The incarcerated deejay already put the genre on high alert that he plans on releasing a thousand new songs this year alone. Both artists released albums last year.

 Who is Alkaline?
Twenty year old Dancehall artist Alkaline says his music represents everything that society is afraid of and society represents everything that he is afraid of. Alkaline comes to the fore with a bundle of hardcore rhymes, killer hooks and slick production, and undoubtedly one of the “Baddest” lyricist.

Describing himself as an ‘in di streets yute’, ALKALINE, whose real name is Earlan Bartley, was born in 1993 ‘under the clock’ in Kingston at the Victory Jubilee Hospital.

Alkaline’s first attempt at committing lyrics to paper was age 14, and by 16 he was already recording and producing his own records. Whilst at Ardenne High, where he completed his high school studies, Alkaline balanced school and the groundwork of a solo career by recording music in and around local studios whenever he got the chance.  At Ardenne High he copped six Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) subjects and currently pursues a first degree in Media and Communication at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

Alkaline is a major Martin Luther King enthusiast and in addition to loving “LIFE” and his music he lists fashion, fishing and playing video games among his passions.

His personal style is not that of a typical artist, but one with a sort of urban edgy with a twist hardcore appeal. One he dubs as dancehall meets urban pop rock culture.

Now working independently with Kereena Beckford and Kimona Bartley as Management team.

And who is Vybz Kartel?
Kartel, who is currently in prison for a murder wrap, was born on January 7, 1976 in Kingston but grew up in Waterford, Portmore. The deejay, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, started his career as a teenager back in the early 1990s under the name Adi Banton. His debut single “Love Fat Woman” was voiced under the One Heart Label owned by Alvin Reid. In the mid to late 90s he joined a group called Vybz Cartel but that group was short-lived.

Vybz Kartel big break in dancehall came in early 2000s when he joined the Bounty Killer lead Alliance. He released a slew hit songs including a full length album “Up 2 Di Time” which won him a ton of new fans. From there he went on to become a household name in the genre, but a 2011 murder charge prove to be his biggest test to date. Despite his subsequent conviction and life sentence, Vybz Kartel manages to remain one of the most relevant artists in dancehall over the past five years.

Today several dancehall artists including Konshens, Popcaan, NotNice, Tommy Lee Sparta, Jah Vinci, Masicka, and many more.

“Iconic. Blessed earthstrong. @vybzkartel #capricornrule,” Konshens said.  — reggaeville/urbanislandz
