We GO for nothing short of excellence!! Greatness and success have become the major objectives of the day: Girl Child Empowerment! I have lived in a society that has been dominated by patriarchy, but the girl child has fought to rise up the ladder of academic ascent, so have I.Gone are the days when education was meant for the male children only. Success was once upon a time meant for the boy child only, with him being seen as a prospective bread winner. The tables have turned. Now we at par. Testimony is Oprah Winfrey and her life. The motto has become, “Girl Child, you’re the only thing greater than yourself.”

Taking a closer look at my favourite subject at high school, the subject that has turned and shaped my life, Literature, it has taught me that you should never let yourself be a victim of circumstances.

Never let yourself become a victim of your dreams. Make the best out of all situations. You are not defined by your past but prepared by it. A great man once said: “Most important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.”

Giving up is no solution to your dreams but rather its providing a coffin to your dreams. Remember for you to be a rising star you must move out of that comfort zone. You must know the real academic battles to fight and the right weapons to fight with. That way you will emerge a victor.

One thing that should keep you motivated is that you should bear in mind that: “Success does not come by accident but you have to go out there and claim it because it is brought about by continued labour and continued watchfulness. You must soldier on, not for one moment hesitate, nor take one backward step. An academic journey requires desire, sacrifice and discipline which will then result in preparation for greater heights. You must remove the unnecessary baggage. You must identify the right people to associate with because the people you associate with are the ones that bring out the “you” in you. Surround yourself with eagles and never with chickens because eagles are the ones that fly high. In life no one remembers a failure because he did not leave any remarkable mark on earth. My literature god-father, Mr Morris Mtisi, a household brand name at The Manica Post, always says serious students are always hungry for new ideas and knowledge…and all bitter roots provide sweet fruits.”

So you must not give up. Aim high. Hard work is never negotiable where success has to be claimed.

Lastly I say to all my peers: “I see my upbringing as a great success story. By disciplining me, my parents inculcated in me self-discipline and by restricting my choices as a child, they gave me so many choices in life. Because of what they did I got to know the difference between right and wrong.

The two schools that I went to, St David’s Girls’ High-Bonda and St Matthias High, I thank you for feeding me with knowledge and bringing the best out of me. My deepest gratitude to my friends, Lourette Chiro and Samantha Vimbai Mukoyi for being eagles that motivated me to fly high.

Once again I extend my sincere gratitude to my Literature god-father, Mr Morris Mtisi, for all the wise words, opportunities and knowledge he gave me. You’re simply the best. Lastly, the Almighty for guiding me all the way. I know Greater is yet to come.
