MANICALAND Basketball Association has been applauded for its commitment to the development of the sport at the grassroots in the province.

Speaking at the end of a three-day training programme at Mutare Girls’ High School, Harare-based international referee and instructor, Forbes Shuva, applauded the MBA and their affiliates for making efforts to ensure that basketball has qualified coaches in schools and clubs.

Addressing the 70 participants who took part in this training, Shuva said he was very pleased to learn that Manicaland as a basketball playing province was up to date in terms of the sports rules.

“Generally, the workshop was well attended and it was well organised. It was a great job. Well done to Manicaland Basketball Association for organising such a wonderful event.

“The event brought together NAPH, NASH and the entire basketball family together. The province is up to date with the sports rules. I hope this will help the growth of the sport in the province since all districts attended. Everyone is now on the same page and I hope that other provinces will do likewise,” he said.

The event director, Clive Wemba, said all the province’s seven districts attended.

“The seven districts were all represented. There was an impressive turnout, coaches coming from different districts in the province and most of them were from NAPH and NASH.

These coaches are also Physical Education teachers and this shows how schools are adapting to the new curriculum introduced by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. I think it is a good start for our province in terms of developing basketball and also nurturing talent from grassroots level to national teams. We see ourselves dominating in the near future.

“We are working very hard as a province as we try to train every coach. We want every coach to be fully equipped with the current FIBA rules,” he said.
