THE devastating environmental and climatic challenges being experienced in the country can be solved and mitigated if political, community and local leaders work together.
This was said by Makoni Central Member of National Assembly who is also Finance and Economic Development Minister, Cde Patrick Chinamasa during the graduation ceremony of over 270 trainers of environmental protection and management last Saturday.

The trainers who were drawn from all the 16 urban and rural wards of Makoni Central constituency included councillors, traditional and political leaders and were trained by the Environmental Management Agency.

They were trained in wetland management, conservation farming, biogas energy, fisheries and hay bailing among other areas.
“All the challenges we are facing can easily be resolved through working with our councillors, traditional and local leadership. Chiefs remain the custodians of our natural resources and heritage. As such, this training programme is a re-affirmation of our desire and commitment to work together for a better and more productive environment with communities at the centre.

“It is my desire that the trained leadership will use their influence to encourage the establishment of community environmental projects throughout Makoni Central constituency. This training also enhances community adaptive capacities in the wake of global warming and climate change.

Communities should therefore embrace climate smart agriculture and undertake conservation farming, drip irrigation, pemaculture as well as cultivating small grains which are drought resistant.
Cde Chinamasa also discouraged people against starting veld fires, saying a lot of property is being lost due to this dangerous practice.
“We are now in the fire season and the dangers of veld fires to life and property are thus imminent. Over the years veld fires have destroyed our country and it is sad to note that a total of 88 human lives have been lost since 2009. Properties worth millions of dollars have also gone up in flames as veld fires continue to ravage the landscape,” Cde Chinamasa said.
Ward 21 councillor, Clr Ceaser Chikunguru hailed EMA and Cde Chinamasa for initiating the training programme which he said was valuable and relevant during this time when the environment is under threat.
He said he would train people in his ward for a better change in managing the environment.
