AN 18-year-old machete wielding teenager from Mutare’s Dangamvura high-density suburb was jailed four years for robbing a high school student’s cellphone worth $25.

Richard Ndoro of House Number 40, Area 12, pleaded guilty to robbery when he appeared before provincial magistrate, Mr Lazarus Murendo on Monday.

Public prosecutor, Mr Brighton Shamuyarira, told the court that Ndoro committed the offence last Thursday.

“Kudakwashe Zambukira of House Number 3452, Area 15, is a Form 4 student at Dangamvura High School and on the day in question at around 11am, he was on his way to school between Beta and Area 3 near Nyamauru River when he met Ndoro who ambushed him.

“Ndoro asked the complainant what time it was and also requested to use his cellphone which he had produced while telling him the time. He was handed over the cellphone and after using it he refused to return it,” said Mr Shamuyarira.

He produced a machete and threatened to attack Zamburika if he continued demanding his cellphone back.

“The complainant screamed for help and passers-by reacted swiftly and apprehended Ndoro who had fled into nearby maize fields,” he said.

The cellphone was recovered at the scene by passers-by who then accompanied the complainant to Dangamvura Police Station to make a report.

Total value stolen was $25 and the same was recovered.

Mr Murendo slapped him with a four-year jail term and set aside one year on condition of good behaviour.

He will serve an effective three years.
