ZIMBABWEAN youths are determined to take art to a greater level as they intend to showcase their unique and special talent. This is true to 16-year-old Munashe Chimonyo, a form four student at St Austin`s High, whose artifacts and drawings have taken Mutare by storm.

“Youths can play a critical role in the country’s socio-economy development. And I intend to do it through arts. We have the potential to transform the arts sector if we get support from stakeholders and the Government. We have youths who have attended vocational and art colleges to acquire skill in art, they can be instrumental in contributing to the national fiscus through Small and Medium Enterprises if they get support.

“Gone are the days when we would look up to our elders as the sole drivers of the art sector. Now, things have changed, and it is the youths who should steer art in a more productive way,” said Chimonyo.

The artist has crafted artifacts including President Mugabe’s portrait as well as other iconic African leaders and various wild animals. He uses pencils and pens.

“President Mugabe is my inspiration. So I decided to craft his portrait and I hope to hand it over to the provincial leadership so that they will give him as my birthday present to him. I just want to encourage some of upcoming youths to work hard in order for them to earn a living than to be involved in social ills such as stealing and prostitution,” he added.
