A MUTARE man was fined $500 for attempting to smuggle goods worth $11 633 into the country.

Lloyd Mukwananzi (30) was convicted on his own guilty plea when he appeared before Mutare magistrate, Miss Perseverance Makala last week for contravening Section 174 of the Customs and Excise Act, Chapter 23:02 (Found in possession of smuggled goods). Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

The court heard that on May 24, police received information to the effect that Mukwananzi was loading suspected smuggled goods into his Toyata Hiace, Registration Number ADW 9025 at Boarder Streams. The informer further told the police that Mukwananzi was driving to Mutare with the smuggled goods. Acting on the information, police waylaid Mukwananzi’s vehicle at Gateway Gardens where they stopped it.

Police searched the vehicle and recovered goods worth $11 633 that had been smuggled into the country.

The vehicle was escorted to Mutare Rural Police Station before being referred to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority where it was seized together with the smuggled goods. Miss Makala ordered Mukwananzi to pay $500 or spend four months behind bars.
